Report Authoring Tool

Designing a system to transform complex datasets into reports, charts, and KPIs

Project Overview

Designed a report authoring experience for an enterprise MDM platform, enabling users to transform complex datasets into reports, charts, and KPI visualizations.

🧑‍💻 Role & Scope

  • User experience designer

  • Desktop app- Cloud native

  • 2023

⚠️ Problem

Enterprise users needed to extract insights from large, complex datasets, but the existing experience was:

  • Fragmented across multiple workflows

  • Dependent on technical knowledge (dimensions, measures, filters)

  • Lacking a clear way to create, visualize, and manage reports end-to-end

Context

The platform aggregates enterprise data across systems to provide a 360° business view.

This tool needed to support:

  • Business users → create reports & insights

  • Technical users → configure datasets

How the System Works

Designing beyond screens: building a scalable reporting system

My role

User Experience designer:
Collaborated with product manager (1) , engineering (3) , UX design (1), Visual design (1) , and UXR (1) to define UX, flows, and system behavior.

Key Design Areas

  1. Reports repository

Centralized hub to manage and access reports

  • Search, filter, metadata

  • Quick navigation to dashboards

2. Authoring Experience

Turned technical configuration into a structured UX flow

  • Dataset selection

  • Dimensions & measures setup

  • Filters and conditions

  • Live preview

3. Visualization Layer
  • Chart creation from reports

  • Multiple visualization types

  • Seamless transition from data → insight

4. End-to-End Flow

Connected the full journey:

Dataset → Report → Chart → Dashboard

👉 Eliminated fragmented workflows
